Terms of service

Last updated September 7, 2026

These terms govern your use of Canadian Codes (the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

The service

Canadian Codes is an AI-assisted research tool for Canadian building-code questions. It searches source documents where publisher permissions allow and uses the retrieved text to answer with citations. When the applicable text is unavailable for licensed use, the AI may answer from its own knowledge and provide official links for verification. These answers may include values and section references that the model has not checked against the governing text. The Service is a research aid, not a code-compliance system of record.

No professional advice

The Service does not provide legal, engineering, architectural, inspection, permitting, or financial advice, and no professional relationship is created by using it. Answers are generated by an AI model and may be incomplete, out of date, or wrong, including when they appear confident and carry citations.

You are responsible for verifying every answer against the cited or linked official source and the code edition actually adopted in your jurisdiction, and for consulting qualified professionals and the authority having jurisdiction before relying on any output. Do not use the Service as the sole basis for any decision affecting safety, structural adequacy, fire protection, occupancy, permitting, or legal compliance.

Code editions and jurisdiction

Provinces, territories, and municipalities adopt, amend, and supersede building codes on their own schedules. The corpus may not reflect the edition, amendment, or bulletin in force where you are building. Where an answer and the governing document conflict, the governing document controls.

Source documents and intellectual property

Building codes, standards, and bylaws referenced by the Service remain the property of their respective publishers and rights holders. Canadian Codes is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or certified by any code publisher, standards body, government, or authority having jurisdiction. Source availability and in-product excerpt access may be limited by the rights granted by each publisher. A link to an external source does not mean that Canadian Codes hosts or licenses that source.

The Service itself, including its software, interface, and compiled corpus metadata, remains the property of Canadian Codes. You may not scrape, bulk-export, resell, or redistribute the corpus or use the Service to build a competing dataset or model.

Accounts

You must provide accurate account information, keep your credentials secure, and be at least the age of majority in your province or territory. You are responsible for activity under your account. Accounts are for a single user; plan limits are per account.

Plans, billing, and cancellation

Paid plans are billed in advance through Stripe in Canadian dollars and renew automatically until cancelled. Prices shown at purchase apply for the then-current term. You may cancel at any time from the billing portal; cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period and you retain access until then.

Except where a refund is required by applicable consumer protection law, fees already paid are non-refundable, including for unused questions in a billing period. Access may be limited, downgraded, or suspended when a payment fails, a subscription is cancelled, or usage exceeds the plan limit shown at purchase. We will give reasonable notice before increasing the price of an existing subscription.

Acceptable use

Do not abuse the Service, attempt to bypass usage or rate limits, share account access, scrape or bulk-download the corpus, submit sensitive personal information, attempt to extract system prompts or model internals, interfere with the Service’s operation or security, or use it for any unlawful purpose.

Availability

The Service is provided without any uptime commitment. It depends on third-party providers for authentication, hosting, storage, payments, and AI inference, and may be unavailable, degraded, or changed without notice. Features may be added, modified, or removed.

Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness, currency, or non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Canadian Codes and its operator are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost revenue, lost data, business interruption, construction delay, rework, remediation, fines, penalties, or failed inspection, arising out of or relating to the Service, whether in contract, tort, or otherwise, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

The total aggregate liability of Canadian Codes and its operator for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for the Service in the twelve months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or one hundred Canadian dollars (CAD $100). Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by applicable law, including liability for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Canadian Codes and its operator from any claim, loss, or expense, including reasonable legal fees, arising from your use of the Service, your breach of these terms, or your reliance on an output in a project, filing, or professional deliverable.

Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your data at any time from the Settings page. We may suspend or terminate an account that breaches these terms, creates risk or legal exposure, or is used in a way that degrades the Service for others. Sections that by their nature should survive termination will survive it.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. Material changes will be reflected in the “last updated” date above and, where the change materially reduces your rights, we will make reasonable efforts to notify account holders. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable in it, without regard to conflict of laws rules. The courts of Ontario have exclusive jurisdiction, except that consumers may bring claims in the courts of their own province or territory where applicable law gives them that right.

General

If any provision is found unenforceable, the remainder stays in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these terms; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. These terms, together with the privacy notice, are the entire agreement between you and Canadian Codes regarding the Service.
