A Look at Canada's Model Code System: NBC, NFC, NPC, and NECB

The National Research Council publishes four national model codes: the National Building Code (NBC), National Fire Code (NFC), National Plumbing Code (NPC), and National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB). None of them are law on their own — each province and territory adopts a version, often with its own amendments layered on top.

That's why the same question can have a different answer in two provinces even when both ultimately trace back to the same national model code. Municipalities can add further local requirements on top of the provincial code, too. Knowing which layer you're reading — national, provincial, or municipal — is the first step in getting a straight answer.
