Ontario's Updated Building Code Takes Effect
January 9, 2025
Ontario's updated building code, built on the 2020 national model codes with the province's own amendments, is now the edition in force for new permit applications. As with past transitions, projects already permitted under the previous edition generally continue under those rules, while new applications are reviewed against the current one.
If you're mid-project or about to apply for a permit in Ontario, this is exactly the kind of change worth confirming directly with your municipality — the effective date and any transition provisions can affect which edition actually applies to your specific application, and "the code changed" isn't always the same as "my project is affected."
Confirm the edition and effective date adopted in your municipality — provinces and territories adopt on their own schedule.
